Floor Carpet Tiles; The Green Choice

Posted on Aug 27, 2020 under Uncategorized | No Comment

It is a very good thing that everyone is talking about green carpet and green Floor carpet tile these days. All the discussion hopefully means that end users, architects, and designers are more interested about what types of materials are going into commercial spaces and reviewing products to see if they are generally sustainable. This is a positive trend that has developed over the last decade and it means that eco flooring is becoming more important to everyone.

There are many types of quality products on the market today that would qualify for green carpets each having various attributes of environmentally friendly material. Many of these meet the CRI Green Label Plus program and have low VOC’s (volatile organic compounds), some qualify for the California Platinum status or help with LEED points and others break ground for their material composition as well as their longevity and performance in the field.

Recently I have heard a few architects say that green Floor carpet tiles are the most sustainable flooring materials available and that statement warrants a closer look at these perceptions. Floor carpet tiles have been used for years in commercial areas instead of broadloom carpets because individual tiles can be replaced in worn or damaged areas which seems to be a more sustainable approach. Additionally, some of the better Floor carpet tile manufacturers are offering 100% recycled content backing materials as well as post and pre-consumer recycled face fibers which are very positive developments.

Additionally, some of these products are made by manufacturers who use bio based fuels and renewable energy sources to power parts of their operations, they operate under ISO 14001 guidelines and adhere to NSF-140 product standards and third party certification. Add to this the fact that a couple companies can recycle these products back into new green Floor carpet tiles indefinitely and it makes for a very sound argument that green Floor carpet tile is the most sustainable soft surface flooring material available.

Now consider the other side of the proverbial green carpet coin. Floor carpet tiles usually require significantly more raw material than broadloom or woven carpets. It is usually well over 30%+ by weight more which means it takes much more materials to make Floor carpet tile. While a couple manufacturers in the commercial market today have open architecture environmental recycling facilities with the ability to recycle their own tiles and other manufacturers products, the fact remains that the large majority of used tiles are either incinerated or dumped into landfills.

In Europe alone over seventy million kilos of tiles are disposed of each year, and while American stats are not available, it is estimated that it is even more so we are talking significant volume. It seems ironic that when people replace Floor carpet tiles they usually throw them away so their designed functionality actually promotes more material being sent into the landfill. What this means the vast majority of these heavier weight products that require more materials to make are going into landfills and that is something to consider when looking for a green carpet or green Floor carpet tile.

Recently a building owner asked me if it was more sustainable to buy a Floor carpet tile with all the green attributes the manufacturer had represented or a hybrid resilient cushion flooring material that did not have as much recycled content material but that has been shown to last for over 35 years in the market and can be fully recycled at the end of its useful life. That is a great question by an informed owner and is the cause of this article.

While green Floor carpet tile can offer users and architects perhaps the best specification on paper for environmentally friendly materials it is the real world where sustainability must also be evaluated. To ignore a proven product that lasts for over 35 years under the most extreme conditions because it does not have recycled content fiber seems short sited and worth another look when considering the true meaning of green carpet.

Carpet flooring is one of the mot popular flooring that is used in hotels and homes but it has now giving way to Floor carpet tiles which have become popular with all. The carpet, cut out like tiles, is considered to be more efficient and durable and easy to maintain as well. This is what makes them quite popular with the different people.

The Floor carpet tile is basically carpet that is cut into square just like tiles and is installed over the existing flooring. Now most of the home owners and commercial building use these instead of roll on carpets. This is because installing them is easy and can be done in a short time. The tiles have a sticky back and one can simply remove the tape and paste them all together to get carpeted flooring. Some of the Floor carpet tile comes without a sticky base and you can paste them on the flooring with the help of double sided tape. This does not involve professional help and is therefore very popular with everyone.

Another reason that has helped increase its popularity is that is easy to clean and are durable as well. In case a section of the carpeted flooring gets damaged or stained, you can simply remove the particular tile and replace it with another one. If a portion of Floor carpet tile becomes worn out then again people have the option to replace it with a new one. This is why many buyers prefer to buy extra tiles and store them. They use the extra tiles when the existing ones have to be replaced. Storing the carpet in the form of the tile is also very easy as it requires little space. The tiles that are available in the market generally are of 18 X 18 inch.

These tiles are available in different weaves also just like the roll-up carpets and you do not have to worry about compromising on the same. Since the carpet is available in the form of tiles, you have the ease to mix and match different tiles and install them to come up with a unique flooring design of your own. These are available in vast range of colors and designs as well.

For cleaning the Floor carpet tiles, you can use a vacuum cleaner on it just like you do on a normal carpet. Thus it very easy to maintain the Floor carpet tile and this is what makes it popular with everyone.

Lots of people love a nice, cosy carpet and, given the chance, a lot of folk will enjoy the opportunity to install a lovely new one. This is frequently the case after moving house, but may also take place after a few years of having the same floors.

For many people, there may be a simple solution that meets all their needs: Simply look at the available carpets, select one that looks nice and blends in with the room as a whole and hey presto – job done, everything looks fine and fresh and all are happy. Whether it’s a cheap carpet, an extravagant one, deep pile or Berber, as long as the style matches up and it’s a nice cosy surface, satisfaction is guaranteed.

However, while that can be the experience for many people, some will prefer something a little more creative. True, there might be all sorts of colours out there and no lack of multi-tone patterns. But this may not be enough for those who want to go a step further – to create their own design.

Short of actually being a carpet designer or manufacturer, the one way to do this is through using carpet tiles. Because each of these only covers a small part of the floor, a combination of various different tiles may offer any number of colour or pattern combinations.

Such possibilities were noted by Buzzle.com when discussing bedroom floors, with the site stating: “Carpet tiles available in many colours and patterns are also a great option for bedroom floor tile designs. If it is about laying flooring in the children’s room, you can have some bright-coloured floor tiles installed. They will add to the cheer in your children’s room.”

Similarly, Carpettile.co.uk said that the creation of “interesting patterns” and “fun designs” for such rooms could be made from different coloured tiles.

It also suggested that all manner of interesting patterns could be created this way. Indeed, those with a particularly creative streak could indulge it to their heart’s content, perhaps creating symbols or letters with the alignment of the carpet.

Of course, those choosing floor carpet tiles must check as ever that they are the right sort (no Berber when there are pets with claws about, for instance). But the fact is that for those keen to use different colours and tile patterns, the opportunities to have fun being creative and designing something very distinct are there to be enjoyed to the max.

I have glass tiles that are approximately 1/4-inch thick. They are made with clear glass and a colored glaze/paint on the back. The manufacturer says to score and snap them (which isn’t working AT ALL) and specifically says not to use a wet saw (no reason as to why given). Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions, or better yet, any experience with this?
